Compass

Compass

A Qazaq Carbon tool for assessing nature-based carbon projects (NbS)

Satellite imagery, biometric forest growth models and Kazakhstan land cadastre data come together in a single assessment. Once a site boundary is uploaded, the tool produces a preliminary estimate of the site's carbon potential.

Carbon potential, assessed before the project starts

Time and cost.

Gathering data from scattered databases slows the process and raises start-up costs.

Scarce expertise.

Carbon modelling of natural ecosystems requires narrow specialisation.

Hidden constraints.

Critical factors — vegetation condition, exact boundaries and land category — often surface at late stages.

Compass brings these stages into one digital process for decisions based on verifiable data.

How Compass works

1

Site boundary.

Upload the site boundary as a file or draw the area on the map.

2

Satellite analysis.

The platform analyses the history and current condition of vegetation using Sentinel-2 and Global Forest Change (Hansen), including NDVI trends, forest cover loss and recovery.

3

Carbon model.

Calculations rely on tree growth curves linked to Kazakhstan's natural zones, with priority given to native species.

4

Results.

The system produces a preliminary feasibility assessment, overlays the boundary on the land cadastre and generates maps for project discussions.

Built on recognised standards

Compass algorithms are based on voluntary carbon market methodologies and IPCC guidelines. The tool prepares a project for launch. Conformity with standards is confirmed by subsequent independent verification.

Transparent algorithms and data

Traceability.

Every calculated value comes with a reference to its source.

No substitutions.

Where no reliable model exists for a species or zone, Compass reports insufficient data instead of using averaged values.

Conservative approach.

Under uncertainty, cautious assumptions apply and risk deductions are always built in.

Reproducible calculations.

The system records model and dataset versions so that repeated runs return identical results.
